About the Webinar:

One of the questions we grapple with as settlers on stolen native lands is how we engage ritual cross-culturally, with protocol, with our Ancestors behind us and future generations before us.  The Center for Babaylan Studies offers a webinar led by Sobey Wing to explore the following themes:

  • The Loss of Indigenous Ritual Practices both in the Philippine homeland and in the diasporas
  • Pre-colonial Rituals of Transition
  • The Regeneration of indigenous Practices amongst:
    • Indigenous Peoples
    • Lowlanders
    • Diasporic communities
  • The relevance and possibilities of initiatory rites that form solidarity economics, relationships (kinship-based, nature, cosmos related), and legacies.

About the Facilitator:

SOBEY WING is the president of Kathara Society, a Pilipino Indigenous Arts Society located in the Unceded Coast Salish Territories also known as Vancouver, BC. He is also a consultant and facilitator of the Cross Cultural Protocols Working Group of Youth Passageways -- a global organization, supporting healthy passage of today’s young people into mature adulthood. Sobey’s Statement:  As an organizer and presenter at the  International Babaylan Conference held in the Unceded Coast Salish Territory in Vancouver, Canada in 2016,  I seek to bring to the upcoming 4th International Babaylan Conference an analysis, discussion, and mobilization of resources towards the work of decolonization and indigenizing among diasporic Filipinos as unwitting settlers on stolen native lands.

To decolonize is a daily & radical pursuit for liberation.

It is part of all of us.

It is part of how we rise in the morning, and lay our heads down at night. It is in the way we raise our children, and in how we relate to others. It is in how we pray, and how we see the natural world. It is in how we work and create our livelihood. It is also in how we invest in our communities, our futures, and our world. Every day, you are doing some of the most radical work of self love and self care, and we are on this journey together.

Help us to continue to bring more educational materials, academic resources, art, culture, and events to your city, your laptop, your school, and into your daily life with a donation. No amount is too small to make a difference.
