Joanna La Torre (ACSW) is a cis-gender, femme, queer, multi-ethnic Filipina scholar who received her Master of Social Work from California State University, Sacramento. She currently practices with transition age youth who’ve experienced multiple oppressions and victimizations, supporting post-traumatic growth and healing. Mx. La Torre’s research and service aid in framing Filipino mental / health disparities within emerging historical trauma and colonial mentality lenses. She seeks to address the paucity of scholarship on Filipinos and to bring more research attention to the protective factors produced by the  movement of decolonizing and re- / indigenizing diasporic Filipinos. To that end, Joanna is a core member of the Center for Babaylan Studies, a seminal organization within this movement and her community work engages in the embedded cultural and community-based responses to the persistent and rippling harms inflicted during colonization.
